The Buffalo Report

It feels like there is too much to say.

I have indeed arrived in Colorado Springs safe and sound.

The drive here was not without incident. We camped several nights. From Stanwood we drove to my mom’s house in Idaho (near Couer d’Alene). We stayed the next night in Butte, which was without excitement except for the amazing full moon….

The following day we headed into Yellowstone where we saw the usual things – geysers, hot springs, LOADS of tourists. It was gorgeous and I took a

lot of photos. That night is when it got interesting….

The Bison Incident.
Here’s the story. So in Yellowstone on Monday night we set up the tent (Jason slept outside so he just helped me set up my tent), ate (having the cooler was such a luxury!) and then I said “I want chocolate!” and Jason said that town wasn’t very far away. So we drove in to West Yellowstone. We went to the supermarket  and headed back. … Continue reading “The Buffalo Report”

Last bits of summer…

I added several more pictures to my “people” set. It would have made more sense if I could have attached them to the posts they belong with, but instead I will just tell you they are there so you know.

The packing is going well. Victories are being won here. At the same time I am preparing to camp for a couple of days in the mountains…. Continue reading “Last bits of summer…”

Woman! WHOA man.

Finishing off time with family right now- we’re flying down I90 in the RV. Sarah and Jill sit up front listening to music a few years newer than what we heard on the way to Idaho. Right now it’s the soundtrack to So I Married An Axe Murderer. Where do bands get names like “Toad the Wet Sprocket”?

Everyone is pretty “done”.

I feel done but I’m trying to mentally prepare myself for the 10 days I have left in Washington. I already feel like I’ve set out in a boat by myself and am heading out to sea… excited for the adventure, longing to share it, missing home.

Here is what I will attempt to accomplish in the next 10 days: Continue reading “Woman! WHOA man.”

Unbirthday Gifts

Currently I am sitting across from two of my nephews. Randall and Jonathan. They are 10 and 11 years old. Cousins who are also friends. Randall is fake coughing to make me laugh or … annoy me? He is also a little annoyed that I’m writing about him on the internet. Jonathan explains that I may be planning world domination with my typing. So we sit across from each other and make silly faces and noises. When he discovers that I’m  typing about our interactions, Randall furrows his brow- an impressively clear message is given.  He is not pleased with my public communications about him.

Later in life he may be both proud and embarrassed to know what an amazing Aunt he has and how much she adores him.

But this is not what I meant to sit down and write about…. Continue reading “Unbirthday Gifts”

Threesday

Writing a note to someone who asked how I was doing, I realized I’m sitting in front of a large group of threes.
3 shifts left at Starbucks (Saturday is my last day working there)
3 years is how long I have worked at Starbucks
3 weeks until I leave for Colorado (I’m shooting for September 10th)
3 months of being a student in a YWAM school (called The School of Missions Communication)
33 is my age
3:30 is when I have to be at work today
$3,000 is how much money I will need for the 3 months of school

I like this kind of list because it makes me feel like stuff is important and meaningful in a way that is bigger than me.
Does that even make sense?

What are the 3’s happening in your life?

The fence between Solitude and Loneliness

Solitude is a good thing, right? I think so. I think it’s possible to find solitude when I am not alone but what happens when I’m alone is the interesting thing because it seems to happen so rarely.

There is always the possibility, in this alone kind of solitude that things will turn south towards loneliness.  Is this the point when you know you should reach out to others? What if it’s the middle of the night and you just can’t sleep?

Last night I was in this very situation….. Continue reading “The fence between Solitude and Loneliness”

Set Yourself on Fire

What a week. Really.
I’m not sure how to tell the story. Where to start or what to share.

It’s not like I chase drama. Generally I like to be Just Fine. So it was probably not a good idea to go into Monday with so little sleep. Why didn’t I sleep? I don’t know. But I didn’t sleep and then I set out to run errands. After wandering, confused around Costco for a while (remember I’m tired) I get in my car to discover that it. won’t. start.

Wait. What? Try again. Won’t. Start.
Also? I smell a lot of gas…. Continue reading “Set Yourself on Fire”

Trying something new

It would be over done for me to make some another joke  about the karate kid in my telling of  The Day I Waxed My Car.

So here’s what’s fun about this day. I am not, generally a person who “does” things. You know? Like make a to-do list and then check things off? I don’t really do that. I occasionally make lists and I occasionally do things but rarely do I finish (or even start, for that matter) projects like waxing a car.
What single woman in her 30’s waxes her car?
Also, it turns out that using both of your hands (like in that movie) really is where it’s at… I mean- my forearms were burning, like, immediately. You gotta spread the work out evenly… Continue reading “Trying something new”

“Having coffee”

I just had coffee with my friend Heidi. Having coffee involves so much more than just drinking liquid from a cup… When I say “I had coffee with my friend” I mean so much more. We connected.

One thing I’ve been thinking about lately (among the many things I’ve been thinking about) is how we understand different things about the world and about ourselves depending on who we’re having coffee with… Continue reading ““Having coffee””

Fambly

I have the kind of family that takes graphs and diagrams to explain.

no images were found

Like most people I have a mom and a dad. Then I also have brothers and sisters. It’s when you ask me a question like “how many brothers and sisters do you have?” that things get confusing.

Don’t worry… I’m not going to try and explain it all here. If you are not already well acquainted with my family and you wonder where all of these people are coming from, just know that you are not alone… Continue reading “Fambly”

Spricht mit mir

I have all these random thoughts and bits… half started posts.. But I can’t seem to finish any of them, I think, because I need to talk about this stuff before I can have some tightly wrapped and tidy post about it all… So here’s what’s on my mind: Continue reading “Spricht mit mir”

Letting Kindness say hello

I’m staying a few nights in the house of some friends… hanging out with two of their (100?) kids.

Today I spent some time with their dog (Kindness) because she barks at me a lot and I thought she should feel more comfortable.

The golden rule: or Who Made This Mess Anyway?

I often find Mondays difficult. For most people Monday means going back to work and they find that  hard. For me Monday is difficult because I often have it off.
Strange? Continue reading “The golden rule: or Who Made This Mess Anyway?”

My Ankle, My Nemesis

Here’s a word I learned recently. Supinate.  It’s how I walk. Yes, I once  even said… it’s how I roll (cue groans).

Supination ( if this is a word) is when you put the weight on the outsides of your feet when you walk. This leads to sprained ankles in folks of all ages and denominations. Including myself. A 33 yr old… uhh.. Baptist? Methodist?
Jesus-ist maybe.

Anyway, here’s how the story goes. Last December I sprained my ankle doing the very tricky trick of stepping off of the porch into the grass. Bam. Or, crack, rather. Crack. Sprained ankle. Did I go to the doctor? No. Did I have have health insurance? Well I did for a few weeks, now that I think back, but all of that was complicated and confusing back in December…. Are we there yet?

You can now officially “follow me” (to the right of this post is an orangey thing you can click on for this purpose). Hopefully that following will involve you running ahead sometimes and giving me your own stories from the road. I would also like to follow you 🙂

Before we really begin this journey together- in the land of blog – I’ll make this post for the purpose of telling you my intentions for our time together.
I want to share as much of my life with you here as a) I have time for b) I have words for and c) You have interest in… Continue reading “Are we there yet?”
